You have not mentioned the difficulty for which your father undergo the colostomy surgery. You have asked this question in Cancer section. Generally the colostomy is done as a diversion colostomy when there is some uncomfortableness in passing the stool normally through rectum. Some times for patients having colorectal cancer high dosage of radiation is given which affects the colon area and the patients experience difficulty in passing stool etc. Colostomy is diverting the colon through a hold made in the abdomen area. These patients generally have colostomy and the stool etc. are collected in a bag.

Now after some months or an year the colon and rectum passage becomes alright and when the doctor find the passage is clear and stools can be passed in the old route they close the colostomy and divert it.

This is not a serious surgery and can be done easily, but healing and adjusting stool to pass through normal passage will take time. Doctors will ask you to take a colonoscopy test and investigate the colon and rectur if it is clear.

Please do not worry and it can be done. -
