It sounds as though he has an ileostomy rather than a colostomy if is entire large intestine is removed (Colostomy is where only part of the large intestine is removed and the stoma is made from the colon, hence 'col' ostomy and a (permanent) ileostomy is where all of the large intestine is removed and the stoma made from the ileum aka small intestine, hence 'ile' ostomy).

He might be eligible for a Kock's Pouch or BCIR (Barnett's Continent Internal Reservoir) but that depends on what caused the surgery in the first place (those with crohns disease aren't usually eligible cos the Crohns can come back and infect the internal pouch). In these surgeries he will still have a tiny stoma, but rather than wear a bag he will have an internal pouch made out of his small intestine and he will need to catheterise the stoma several times a day. He just wears a small patch over the stoma the rest of the time. Only certain hospitals do this type of surgery and if something goes wrong he will need to go back to those hospitals because local doctors usually won't touch it.

I have lived with my ileostomy very happily for 33 years (I've had my anus and rectum removed too) and your dad will be able to as well after he heals. The hardest part of the surgery is mental issues. Once they are resolved, and it can take time, a lot of people find anti depressants can help them during this time, the sky is the limit. My surgery was due to ulcerative colitis and I got mine when I was 10 years old.

Take care
