The medical staff prefer to keep you as pain free as possible because it helps you heal faster so if you're in pain, let them know so they can remedy the situation quickly for you. They usually give you a choice of an epidural which numbs the entire area or a pcp (patient controlled pain pump), sometimes both. You'll probably walk like the Hunchback of Notre Dame for a couple of weeks but it's not unbearable - I had my ileostomy surgery when I was 10 years old and I survived with just shots of pethidene every 6 hours or so :) Hint: after surgery while you're healing, if you have to cough, sneeze or laugh, hold a pillow to your tummy - it really helps :) Good luck and you'll do fine - There are 1000's of ostomates out there of all ages (from 0 days old to people in their 80's and 90's) who have been through it and survived.
